I am changing out the stock Fender speakers in a 1978-79 ultralinear Pro Reverb.

I saw in another thread that you would recommend either the G12's or the Veteran 30's for the ultralinear Pro Reverbs.  While searching your sight, I also saw good praise for the Veteran 30/ET65 combo and wanted to hear your opinions about it being used in an amp like the ultra-linear Pro Reverb.

I would like to remain somewhat true to the intended Fender tone, but I don't particularly want some of the super shrilling, chimy, piercing high tones that can be present with the stock speakers.  I am looking for all around clarity with a little spank and a thick yet tight low end.

Thanks for your advice,

This is a bit of a tough one!  Those amps suffer from ultra-stiff filtering ... no rectifier sag ... insane amounts of neg feedback ... and the "ultra linear" tranny.  All this add up to a very "solid-state" sounding tube amp ... an amp that does not gracefully go into overdriven tones ... and responds in a very stiff nature.  I have several.

My Rx is this:  go for speakers that are as nimble and touch-sensitive as possible ... while possibly imparting a nice smokey flavor on the otherwise colorless amp ... and maybe even speakers that tend to compress and breakup fairly early (cause God knows the amp wont).

If you can swing the bucks, the best Rx is a pair of Blackhawks ... they do amazing things to a late model SF Pro!

Next in line, a pair of G12 C/S ... the smooth cones add that smokey warmth ... like a touch of tweed tone!

Oh, and you can also take the amp to a good tech and have it converted to blackface era specs ... a bit pricey, though.

Hi,
I've got a 1969 Pro Reverb that has been blackfaced and has a reduced negative feedback mod as well. The neg feedback mod made the amp more touch sensitive but it still is linear/flat sounding and clean forever. I find myself turning up the treble a lot in order to get the amp to "wake up". It has stock celestion C12 speakers (reconed by Weber). Any suggestions on what speakers to try?

Hi Elynen ... go for our most popular & flexable 2x12 combo ... one Retro 30 to add the chime you are lacking, and an ET65 to add the organic goo!
