Hello all, I am currently preparing to build a 2x12 and looking for speaker suggestions. It will be a convertible back made of birch ply(putting a piano hinge in the back panel to make it closed or open as I see fit). Dimensions are 30" wide x 18" tall x 14" deep. I play mostly southern rock/blues. Looking for a Duane Allman type tone. I know he used JBL D120's and Cerwin-Vega 123's along with celestion greenbacks in his Marshall stacks. If at all possible, I would like to have 2 of the same speaker. Any speaker suggestions for me? Thanks

What type of amp will you be playing with this setup? I'm interested to hear the responses from the community about this one. I've only ever tried the Veteran 30 with GREAT results and I'm a blues/rock/classic rock player. I put mine in a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.

I have 2 amp options that will be a bday purchase. One is a orange crush pro 120 and the other is a peavey valve king ii 20. I'm leaning towards the valve king due to the tubes as the orange is a solid state. Currently I am setup with an old Randall 60 watt stereo chorus combo. The speakers are shot and I will be using the custom built cab as the speakers for it. Playing a new Gibson LPJ with the 61 zebra pups through it. What speakers would go well with the valve king?

Okay ... so ... I'm totally a tube guy (I MAKE high-end tube amps!) ... but of those two, I would STRONGLY suggest the orange crush pro 120 ... it's a fine sounding amp at any volume ... and don't let the SS thing scare you, they sound excellent.

So ... given it's 120-watt output, and your personal tastes ... I'd do a pair of ET90s.

Hey Vaughn
Any particular reason why you would recommend the orange over the valveking? Would a different lower wattage tube amp be a better choice or am I better off going with the higher wattage orange and using a tube screamer for overdrive? I'm planning on getting into amp building eventually but starting on cabs first.
Thanks

I just love that Orange ... and the Valve Kings kind of hit me as ... meh... not bad, just not seller...

Oh, and you'll be able to get PLENTY of Dirt from the Orange at ANY volume, too! Seriously!!!

And then, when your ready to build ... BUILD yourself a low-wattage tube amp ... one of the many 5e3 tweed Deluxe kits is an EXCELLENT place to start!
