Hi- I recently replaced the stock Sheffield 1230 with a Reaper 30 in my mid 90s SS Transtube Peavey Express. I can't believe the tone difference. It was a good sounding amp already but now it sounds incredible. I want to play it all day long. It is so much more alive. Sounds like at totally different amp and it also sounds more like a tube amp than before (I guess it brings out the "Trans-tubiness").
The Express is rated at 65 watts RMS and the Reaper at 30 watts RMS. I used the Reaper because I had it laying around and was curious to hear how it sounded in the Express. I understand "tube watts" and "SS watts" are not created equal and that you can generally run a speaker with a lower power rating in a SS amp vs a tube amp of the same output rating. Anyway, I rarely ever turn this amp up past 4 or 5 and if I need LOTS of sound from it, I can run it through a 212 cab loaded with Veteran 30s (which also sounds great).
I'm wondering is there any harm in using this speaker in this amp as long as I don't turn it up say more than 50%? Also, if I were to replace it with a proper rated speaker, what would the best options be? Blues/jazz/classic rock sounds.
Thanks.
Scott
