I have a Peavey 412MS Cabinet with Sheffield 1290s. The cabinet is a bit dark and I want to switch out the two top speakers to get more sparkle and bite. I am leaning towards the Retro 30, but have also considered the G12C. I play blues, Contemporary Christian Worship, and 60s and Classic Rock. How would either of these work or do you have a better suggestion?
Man ... I think you are on the right track with either of those ...
The Ret 30s will be "bigger" overall ... with more low-bottom along with a lot of top-end sparkle ...
The G12s will be stiffer and have more upper-mid bight ... but with less very top sparkle and less bottom.
So ... more bite: G12C ... More sparkle: Ret 30!
I ended up going with the Retro 30s. The muddiness is gone and added alot of top end sparkle. I will have to wait until this weekend to crank it up to volume and see what it really sounds like. I was surprised at how much low end the Ret 30s have. Their lows seem a little stronger and tighter than the 1290s. They are definitely a bit louder than the 1290s and are the dominant voice (which is OK with me). I have had problems getting burried in the mix with this cab; I don't think that is going to be a problem any more. I will know for sure this Sunday.
