I'm very new to buying replacement speakers and I know this is most likely a dumb question but is it common for new speakers to have some sort of machine oil on and around the magnet? Is it ok to clean it?

Hummm ... I've never encountered that myself ... but, having been to the plant and watched them being made, I'd say yes, there are quite a few places where machine oil is present, so it wouldn't strike me as too unusual. Oh, and sure, wipe it off if ya want!
