Ok... Long story short. I have a frankenfender Pro Reverb. I got it from a guy whose dad passed and had it since the mid 70s. He worked at a shop and put together a 60s blackface into a silver face cabinet, but... He modded it in the weirdest ways. It has the transformer set from a twin in it with an added tube socket and he added a mid control to the vibrato channel. I have a close friend that owns Scarlett Amplification dig into it and we rebuilt it. It is still powered by the twin set and extra tube (benches at about 87watts) and we added a mid to the normal channel so now I can dial in mids on both channels. This actually works great. Also, we added the master circuit he uses in his custom builds so that I can dial each channel in and level them at high gain yet dial it down in volume. Again it works wonderfully. I use an a/b between them and use the normal channel with pedals for modern high gain crunch and so forth and use the vibrato/tremolo channel for clean all original fender tone and reverb/trem. This amp sounds fantastic. The downside is it has stock 70s Utahs in it and I want to switch them out. Partially because they don't present all the tone this amp has and second because at 80+ I am going to shred them.
Finally the question... I want to be able to retain the beautiful classic fender TONE that I get from her and also be able to punch out the compressed crunch that is more representative of a Marshall that I am able to get on the Normal channel. I have been thinking about an ET65 / gc12s combo. I am afraid if I get too top end with a straight gc12 and the crunch of the normal channel it may be too shrill. Also, any recommendations of a totally different combo? I play multiple guitars through it. Les Paul, Sg, 72 tele deluxe and even a 68 Rick 412/12 solid body. The stuff I play regularly ranges from surf, murder ballad country, 60s garage fuzz and 80s punk rock all in one set. Thanks for any and all help. Can't wait to throw some WGS in this beast and hear her sing!!!!
Go with a pair of ET65's ... just do it, you'll LOVE them!
