I have one of these and the sound seems only o.k. ( a little thin overall and also shrill in the top end) I was wondering if upgrading to a Retro 30 would be a wise choice, I was also considering the Reaper 55hz but am concerned w/the wattage disparity. Thoughts?

Four years later, I have the same question. Is the Retro 30 a good choice for the VS65R? Are there other models you'd recommend, such as the British Lead? Vince previously recommended the HM75, now out of production. What characteristics would recommend each for the VS65R or other similar Marshall Valvestate amp?

Wow ... sorry I missed this the FIRST time around! Anyway, I've got one of these in the shop right now. VERY good sounding crunch amp ... nails the EVH brown sound :-)
I'd say Ret 30 would be great if you want to add a little more top end sizzle and bottom end to the amp.
However, if you want to keep it more mid-focused (like EVH), I'd go Britt Lead.
