I have one of the early Marshall 3005 heads and (2) 1x10" cabs. It has the stock Celestions in it, which... aren't as bad as some make them out to be.

However, I've heard the Lead 12 heads, really shine with higher wattage speakers, even running 4x12 cabs sufficiently.

I'm not looking for a 4x12 and just want to upgrade the current speakers. I like a tone built around the "brown sound", I play mostly 70s, 80s 90s rock/hard rock, though I typically like a tone that's a bit more overdriven than what was orginally recorded with. Why I chose an amp, modeled after a wide-open JCM-800.

I'm thinking about a G10C and G10C/S combo. G10C in the bottom (from what I'm reading it seems like this would be better suited in the bottom cab).

However, I'm also eye-balling the Retro 10s.

Any input on how well, the G series would mate with that Marshall tone search... or the Retros? Any particular combo of them that works best?

Thanks for any help.

DON'T go with a G10C/S ... the smooth cone will be terribly dark/woofy in that tiny sealed box!

A pair of G10C's would probably be okay ... they would make the rig a lot louder & heavier, too!

But ... my best suggestion is a pair of Retro 10's ... or one Ret 10 & one GB 10!

I'll check that out!

Though, the GB's are only 20 watts. I've been told with the SS Marshalls you'll get bad speaker breakup on anything under the 25 watts that come in the cabs. That's one of the reasons I'm dumping the stock celestions. They break up way too soon. Also have to drop treble down to 1, to get any decent tone out of them.

Humm ... well then ... maybe you WOULD like the extreme warmth of the G10 C/S...

Also ... if you can wait ... we'll release a 10" version of the ever-popular ET65 soon ... I've already got one that I've been testing ... and I think it's easily the best sounding British voiced 10" out there.  Very warm & organic, just like the ET65!
