Hi Vaughn,
lately I am thinking about a G12C/S for some smokier sounds and vintage feel.
I do like, as you might remember, all of your american line (at least the ones that I know: G12C, G12A and, one of my all time favorites, the G10C). The dynamic range of the G12C ist fantastic, but the speaker works only in 1x12 applications for me (or mixed with the G10C, als the only that seems to get along with it for me).
By chance I got my hand on a Reaper 55, which I can compare face to face to my Pre-Rola G12H30 55Hz...
The Reaper 55 has a nice, somewhat smokey feel, but really lacks high end and sparkle to me. Using it in my 18w TMB it really fattened the amp, but tamed the treble too much. It sounds very dark to my ears (considerably darker than my 47 years old Pre-Rola!).
How does the G12C/s compare to this? The videos on YT also show a more warm, darkish speaker (which is a good thing, as long as it is not too dull). The tone chart says, the G12C/s being in the ET65 range, from the vids maybe a bit darker - but not as much as the Reaper 55...
But that´s the charts... What can you tell me about it?
The speaker is meant for a 112 cab for a H&K Puretone (Absolute SLEEPER! and BRIGHT) and my beloved Havelstar 5881 (somewhat tweedy), maybe the TMB from time to time.
Somebody chiming in as well? Everybody is welcome!
Best regards
Heiko
Well ... in every circumstance I've found ... the Smooth-cone is even DARKER than the Reaper 55!
Hi Vaughn,
thanks for your opinion. That´s what I expected from what you had written before and compares good to the YT Vids I found on the G12C/S.
Sooner or later I might try the speaker anyways for my HK Puretone, which is a VERY bright amp (but for some reason works alright with the G12C for SRV tones). For my Havelstar the G12C/S might be too dark (as is the Reaper55).
I let you (all) know my findings, after having tried it.
best regards and
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY
Heiko
Yes ... I'm certainly not saying the smoothie sounds bad! I actually just shippd one of my own Vaughn Skow MK1, C1 amps with a G12C/S. I also love the way they sound with a blackface Bandmaster ... which has a lot of top-end on tap.
