I've searched this forum and see you be recommended the ET65. I currently have a 1x12 combo with a Greenback. I like it...until I really crank the amp and push it. The lows get mushy and the speaker kinda loses itself. The Z28 is a fat, mid forward amp that definitely punches above it's weight class. I would like a cleaner, less mid heavy speaker that's not too warm but will handle that cranked amp crunch but still be articulate when I dial a clean tone. Reaper? Invader?

Yes, that's the sound of a single 25-watt Greenie.

Invader is very mid-heavy ... so no.
Reaper is very full-bodied ... so probably not.

Given what you state you want ... I'd recommend the Retro 30 ... lots of top-end articulation, and a very solid bottom.

Awesome, thanks Vaughn! Compared to the Greenback, does the Retro30 have more mids or less? I like the high end articulation and tight low end and at 75 vs 25 watts, I expect more headroom. The only question is the mids, since the Retro30 is in the Vintage 30 ballpark and IMO that's a very "middy" speaker and not my favorite.

Once again I say "Mids" is too generic a term ... are you talking more lower-mid organic warmth (like 200-400Hz) ... more upper-midrange bite (2-4K) ... or more straight-up midrange honk (like 800Hz - 2K)?

The Retro has a lot(!) more top-end articulation (above say 4k), and not nearly as much straight-up 400hz-1Khz honk as the Greenback. The retro also has a lot more solid bottom end.

Vaughn,

Given the first two posts, if a guitar player wanted to have a 2x12 cabinet and mix speakers for use with that amplifier, would an ET-65 combined with a Retro 30 be an optimal option?

Yes ... I would say so.

Vaughn,

Would an alnico speaker also work with that amp for use in a 1x12 enclosure?

If so, which WGS alnico speaker - perhaps Blackhawk?

Oh heck yea, The Blakhawk (NOT HP) is a #1 choice if ya can swing the cost!!!
