I'm looking for a "jack if all trades" kind of speaker for a closed back 1x12 cab. It will get used with a variety if amps, but most are in the Marshall-esque vein. Something that can handle a 50w amp cranked, and thump if I need it to, but smooth enough for low gain and clean blues. I also have some low wattage single ended amps as well that I will use it with.
I have an original G12-65 in my JCM800 combo, and it sounds fantastic, but it's an open back cab, so I don't know what it would sound like in a closed back. Also, it might roll off the bass a little too much for what I'm looking for.
Any recommendations?
I put a Liberator 80 in a closed-back Fender 1X12, and it was unreal. It was like adding 60 watts to the amp. Very smooth, with great top end detail. I would recommend this tweak for anyone unsatisfied with the factory speaker, or especially someone needing a "one size fits all" solution for different heads/ etc. Best solution for modeling amps as well, as the response is even, and doesn't "color" the sound, it allows what's there to completely come out.
If you are not sure which one of these things you want, I would recommend the Liberator 80, can't go wrong with it.
I think the Liberator or ET-90 would both work for what you are looking for. If price is not an issue the BlackHawk HP is a very good "do all" speaker also. The ET-90 may be a little too bass heavy in a closed back cab now that I think about it.
