I bought a Blues Jr III a few months ago and would like to change out the speaker. There's a great video that briefly highlights the stellar tone of your ET-65 in the the BJIII here (@7:50):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDuvo_JBsOk
The last seconds of this video had me ready to buy the 65... until I heard the WGS comparison video between the ET-65 and the ET-90. I was very impressed by the ET-90. The thing I couldn't discerne from the comparison is if the ET-90 had the same "chugginess" as the ET-65 (as described in the video I linked to above). Also in the comparison video, I found that the ET-90, more than anything, was louder (more efficient) than the ET-65. Is there any other difference that may have not come across in the video? How would you describe the eq difference?
If this has been discussed before, I apologize ahead of time.
Thanks,
Kyle
Haven't had anyone try the ET-90 in a BJ yet ... here's what I can say...
Personally, I'd go with the ET-65 for two reasons:
1. It will fit better ... a heavy magnet speaker like the ET-90 will just BARELY(!!) fit ... and will be almost touching the tubes.
2. I think the more organic woodiness of the ET-65 is a great fit for the BJ!
Hi Vaughn,
I had a ET-65 that I currently wasn't using in a cab and having read your thoughts about the combo of the Jr. and the 65 was especially interesting. A few months ago, I bought a tweed Blues Jr. (that is naturally bright) that Fender supplies with the Jensen C12N and unfortunately I can't say I'm a fan of that speaker - just too beamy and not enough bottom end balls. I switched out the Jensen for the ET-65 and there's a noticeable difference . . . much smoother without that annoying brittle top end. Suprisingly, there's not as much bottom end as I thought there might be but I'm sure that's due to the small cabinet size and the fact that it's an open design. Nonetheless, the ET has found a permanent home there.
In an unrelated question, I am converting a 1x12 Hot Rod Deluxe speaker cabinet to a 2x10 configuration with a new baffle from Mojotone to be used primarily with an Orange AD30 and an 2x12 open back cab that contains a Celestion V30 and a WGS ET-90. What speakers do you think would be better suited to use for the 10s? The G10C or the G10C/S or one of each? I'm wondering if the G10C would be too bright, although the AD30 isn't a particularly bright amp.
Thanks for your input!
Yea ... the real problem with the Blues Jr & the Pro Jr is that the boxes are just plain too darn small to really sound any good ... a problem that is only confounded with the Jensen! I just got done fixing a Pro Jr in a 2x10 custom cab made of true finger jointed pine ... now that's a Pro Jr that REALLY sounds nice!
For your 2x10, I'd go with both ribbed-cone G10s ... the smooth-cone will be REALLY dark with the Orange ... plus the regular G10's are pretty huge on the bottom anyway. Oh, And convert it to a 1/3-open if possible, too!
Forgive me for posting on a old thread, but placing an ET90 in a Blues Junior Cab is not a great idea. It c
ears the tubes maybe an 1/16" to 1/8", too close in my opinion. I have a new ET90 in the box as a result waiting for a new home. The ET65 on the other hand fits and sounds wonderful.

How do I edit a comment since I messed it up?
