Forget the nonsense, at least in my experience, that the Blue Marvel will be fine once it's broken in. I recently picked up a Peavey Classic 30, with the original speaker, that's over five years old. This amp was gigged for a few years at higher volumes, so I can't imagine a speaker could be more broken in. To my ears the speaker is shrill and weak sounding. I just got a G12 C/S today and put it in. Right out of the box I was floored at how good it sounds. Highs are pleasant but not shrill. The amp sounds fuller and louder. I couldn't be happier. I will play this amp until it dies of old age, then I'll throw out the chassis and keep it as an extension cab. This is my first WGS speaker, but it won't be my last.
Thanks so much for taking the time to post here :-)
Yes, those are fantastic amp designs ... but yep, they really cheesed out on the speakers!
As happy as you are now, give that smooth cone about 10-20 hrs of solid play time and you'll be even happier ... those cones are a bit on the stiff side, and do get better with break-in.
I had a great 2001 C30 that I used for 7 years weekly at practice and gigs. Glad to see someone enjoying their's. Mine is now an extension cabinet after just shy of 15 years of playing.
I'd like to chime in on this one.
I have a Peavey Encore which I love and have posted about here in this forum before. I've placed several speakers in it looking to improve the 'papery' sounding Scorpion that it came with (I've owned this amp since 1987). Some of the standouts were the ET65 and a Hellatone H60L but the one speaker to crush them all was the C/S. Fullness, voice, room-filling, and none of that paperiness. Just sonic beauty all the way around with a thickness aand depth that defies its open-back mounting.
So, thanks and cudos to WGS on this one!
