I am considering a Ceriatone Mini OTS or the 50 watt OTS amp. What speaker is recommended for a 1x12 or 2x12 cab? I play mostly contemporary music using mostly overdrive and occasionally distortion but want a speaker that'll cover classic rock to SRV. Thanks for the advice.
I too have one
Celestion gold are nice
Yes ... if you can afford AlNiCo ... go for the Blackhawk (WGS "Gold" equiv).
If not, a ET65.
The plate voltage is low enough in the Mini OTS (380V) that you can also use TS 6V6GT without concern for a warmer EL34-ish sound compared to the stock 6V6S. They might be better with the Blackhawk 50W for a later-era Dumble model '#183' sound, but that's just a hunch based on my impression of the midrange character of the Blackhawk.
I'd say go with the ET65 or Blackhawk HP for a more classic Fendery sound if you go for the 50W OTS...and put TS 7581A power tubes on your short list to compare with the stock JJ 6L6GC. I'd also consider the JJ preamp tube swaps I always recommend if you don't use NOS--$30 that will make the most of the amp and speaker choice. Of course, try the amp with the stock tubes first. Only replace one at a time so you'll know which ones work OK, and can hear the difference they each make. I'd start with a long-plate ECC803S for the PI slot. It's warmer/clearer/more-dynamic than the short-plate ECC83S. The medium-plate ECC83MG is basically "in between" the two others. Maybe record the results of each tube change using a looped sample going into the amp so you'll really know the differences. Hope this isn't info overload. Good for future reference anyway.
