I've had this Peavey 412MS for AGES. It still has the stock Sheffield 1290s (not 1200s or 1230s). I used to run it with a '66 Fender Dual Showman head and a '69 Fender Bassman head that I blackfaced. However, I'm getting more into the Marshall sound these days.
I've got a Plexi Super Lead clone and I'm just not getting that fat, chewy midrange with the stock speakers in the 412MS. They have a more scooped Celestion G12T-75 type sound.
I was thinking about getting a pair of Green Berets to replace a pair of the stockers to get that chewy midrange but retain some of the low-end of the Sheffields, but this cab is a bit different dimensionally (seems to be as big as a 1960A but there's no space between the speakers like in a 1960A), so things might turn out a bit different than I would think.
Here's a pic of the cab, in case that helps.

A good place to start:

Awesome. Thanks. :)
I actually was aware of the JBLs that Eddie used, which is why I was thinking of only replacing two of the Sheffields.
Do you think the speaker mounting geometry (the quad being closer to each other, practically on top of each other) will affect the tone versus a 1960A spec cab or is that just splitting hairs? The outer dimensions are fractions of an inch smaller in height and depth, too.
Also, curious... How does a quad of Green Berets hold up to a dimed 1959-type amp without an attenuator? I normally use an attenuator (I have a Jet City Jettenuator) and I'm looking into getting a Variac, but just in case I wanted to blow out my neighbor's windows, which would give up first -- the windows or the Green Berets?
Thanks for the help. :)
So, does anybody think that the geometry of the Peavey cab is different enough from a Marshall cab to actually affect tone, even with the same speakers?
Oh gosh ... I don't know. It's a bit smaller cab, and probably made of a more dense/less resonant MDF type material. Both of those things make the most difference in the below-200Hz bass frequencies ... the Organic goo you are looking for is more in the 400Hz-1K range. So... yea ... maybe :-)
I just wanted to bump this since I never got an answer.
