Hi WGS and all,
i will change my amp soon and will go for a custom amp, sort of cross between a revisited Fender blackface sound (with also a Fender tweed mode), and Two Rock clean sound just to explain.
I asked myself a long time for the question of open or closed back cab (never had an open cab, just a good closed back with V30 with my current amp) but i think i will run into a 2*12 open back cab to stay in the "spirit" of this kind of clean sounds.
That's also why i think i must go to another thing than my current closed back with 2 V30 that is not the good thing with that kind of US bluesy sounds, even if it's not a shame speaker for the clean sounds.
That is important to tell to help choosing the good speakers i think ;)
I will certainly put a WGS ET65, but i prefer to mix speakers to have a more balanced sound than with 2 ET65, and to get the best of both, and a good complementarity between them.
1st thing: what is the difference between the standard ET65 and the ones WGS make for Two Rock, called TR ET65B? I think in any case it's an exclusivity for TR, but i just want to know...
I want something all-round enough but with also plenty of personnality, that can go from vintage clean ala Knopfler, SRV, KWS etc, and more moderne cleans ala Two Rock like Schofield.
I want also the mix to be very good for vintage 70's blues-rock overdriven tones, and vintage classic rock tone, with both the US or UK sound, as i also play a lot of that kind of stuff.
My influences go from the US bluesy clean i spoke above, to fat yet edgy, big and powerful driven sounds: old schools like ZZ Top, ACDC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Thin Lizzy, Steppenwolf, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix etc, and more "modern" like kind of Guns n' Roses or more gainy Gary Moore sounds.
I have a Gibson LP and a Strat, with humbuckers, single coil and P90 sounds: both guitars have already plenty of bass, roundness and are bright enough for me (but not harsh to my ears) in a pair of "old" (i want to say "burned") Celestion V30 tu cut through the mix in my band (i played rythm parts and also sometimes leads).
I hesitate between:
-the Reaper HP, seems to be good for clean tones but i'm afraid it could be too dark/bassy in the low end and bright in the high, and there is 1dB more than the ET65... I don't really see how it could be with the ET65, and with driven tones... But it seems to be a good speaker though.
- and with the Veteran30, that is, with the ET65, the combination WGS tend to recommend for an all-round stuff, but maybe it could be too "modern" or not good enough for the cleans (too much mids?)... The good point is that it's exactly the same sensitivity than the ET65, 98dB...
- i don't thought about the Retro30 that seems to me too powerful in comparison to the ET65, and maybe too bright...
Just to finish, i know this is the kind of questions Vaughn and WGS always have, but i read a lot in the forum and didin't find the answer for MY case (open back cab, and a boutique clean amp), so i decided to create a new topic... Hope you'll be OK ;)
Thanks in advance for all advices, and sorry for my poor english ;)
Nobody have ideas or advices for my mix with an open back 2*12 cab?
Your post was so long it was daunting to read ... but here is my take:
The ET90 is as close to the Two-Rock speaker as you will get (outside of a Two-Rock amp, of course!) ... and ... I think I would recommend that to go with your ET-65. Sounds like just what you want ... exactly!
Oh, and welcome to the world of open-back ... you're gonna love it :-)
Hi Vaughn,
and thanks for the reply. Sorry for the lenght of the post, that was just to give all the explanations to help users giving precise advices for me ;)
OK, that really was not what i thought for the ET90, especially cause there is a lot of power difference between the 65 and this 90 (98,02 for 65, and more than 100dB for the 90)...
I was rather after the Vet30, Reaper or Retro, to keep a really good mix for he clean tone sthat will be the base of the sound, but to be good also for great vintage overdriven, fat and gainy sounds.
I'll take your advice in account anyway, and thanks for the open back family, hope i'll like it!!!!
If other users have any other advices or experience to talk about with a speaker mix based on the ET65 and one of the other speaker i spoke above, i take ;)
