Hello WGS gurus.
A friend recommended WGS to me as I delved into the idea of building up some cabs from scratch. I'm hoping you can give me some recommendations on appropriate WGS speakers.
My intent is to run a stereo setup with two 1x12 cabs, but hopefully have one of those cabs be good enough on its own to run it alone when I don't feel like dragging out the second cab. 99.44% of the time this setup is going to be used at home, at a bit more than bedroom levels, but not enough to disturb the neighbors. To that end I'm using an old Marshall JMP-1 rack pre-amp with a Mesa Boogie 20/20 Dynawatt power amp, for 20 watts per channel. When I get to the point of playing for other people I'll mic the cab(s) and run it through a sound system. Tone-wise my target is Pyromania/Hysteria/Adrenalize era Def Leppard.
So there are two scenarios to consider:
1. Running a single 1x12 cab that may be a compromise, but is good enough on its own.
2. Running two 1x12 cabs in stereo, with speakers that complement eachother.
Hopefully you can recommend a good compromise speaker for scenario #1, and a second speaker that fills out the sound for #2.
If it helps, my buddy may be parting with one or more of an ET65, Reaper 55, or Invader, and the 1x12 cab I have on hand to start the project currently has a Celestion Lead 80, so if I can re-use one or more of those it would certainly be a boon for me. That said, if there's a completely different set of WGS speakers that would get me where I want to go that would be OK too.
If satisfying both scenarios with one set of speakers isn't possible, then I'd entertain ideas for a single 1x12 to use in mono when I'm lazy, and a seperate stereo 2x12 for when I'm feeling energetic enough to lug it around.
Thanks,
Brent
I like the Invader/ Retro 30 combo. I play alot of same type material,The Invader would be the stand alone in my opinion.
"Tone-wise my target is Pyromania/Hysteria/Adrenalize era Def Leppard" ...
Hey, wanna buy my original Rockman? ... just kidding ... sorta ... they really DID record a lot of that stuff through a Rockman...
Anyway ... you'd be totally happy with the ET65/Invader if your buddy sells them to you. If you start from scratch with new speakers, I'd think Green Beret & Reaper (NOT 55 or HP) ... mostly because of the classic Britt voice in spades, and because they both sound very rewarding in that 20-watt range and at not-so-loud levels :-)
