Hi Vaughn and forum users,
I have a beautiful clone of a brownface Vibroverb that currently has a pair of G10C speakers in it. The speakers sound great - smooth, detailed, musical - and it's easily the best amp I've ever played on. But.....
I have a 1x12 combo that I recently put a Celestion Alnico Cream speaker in. I was curious to hear the Vibroverb through the Celestion (having never owned an alnico before) so plugged it in instead of the 10s. I lost a lot of clarity in the top end and definitely prefer the G10C's overall, but I got this great growl when I dug in to the D and G strings that I loved, suddenly the brownface sound became this whole new animal.
So my quest is now to find a speaker that I can pair with the G10C that will give me that growl without taking over the amp's sound. I'm after a speaker that will growl when pushed but not get too compressed and fizzy. In terms of my playing style, I'm using less and less pedals and trying to play in that sweet spot where I can use the volume of playing to move between clean and distorted. That growl I heard through the Celestion really complimented that way of playing.
Any suggestions welcome!
Thanks in advance,
Sam
