I am planning to buy a Princeton Reverb head kit with a 1x12 cab soon to pair with my badcat Cub iv. Im new to fender style amps. I need help picking a speaker. Im used to AC style amps so i am not Familiar with speakers in an american style amp. Playing mostly single coils and P90s with a mix of classic rock and P&W. i like full open sound for cleans and gain. Handles dynamics all low volumes as well as pushed. Considering ET65 or G12S/C.
Is there any pros/cons to choose a way over
Powered speaker. Like a 90W speaker in a 15w amp?
Open to other speaker suggestions as well!
I don't like it ... the higher wattage speakers have to be built a little sturdier all-around to handle the power, which tends to make them pretty sterile when only fed with a few watts. In the WGS line ... everything up to 65-watts (ie: the ET65) will sound fine with the 15-watter, above that, I would not recommend.
Interesting about the ET90, but I wouldn't classify the ET65 as having a "full open" sound. I'd think something like the Retro 30 would be more like what you are used to with AC style amps, if it's not too bright for a PR amp. That might depend on the tubes you use. FI, the JJ 6V6S power tubes have a more pronounced high end than the warmer sounding Tung Sol 6V6GT tubes much more like the original 6V6GT tubes that shipped with amps back in the day. You might prefer the JJ 6V6S with an ET65 or G12S/C.
