I have a Lab Series 100W head (an L5 that I converted into a head after a previous owner cut it in half to take out the speakers!).
I saw Vaughan's blog on the Lab Series -- cool! I play mostly Les Paul / humbucker guitars and I love the Marshall tone, but can't spring it to buy one.
I have a big closed back 2x12 cab (Seismic) that is 31 x 21.5 x 15.
I am after tone versatility and love the Lab Series' old-school modeling capabilities. Some of my faves are Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons (yeah Gibson/Marshall), and SRV's wah sound too -- but also tight funky stuff and soulful blues like John Mayer's electric guitar work.
So I'm thinking a mixed pair of WGS speakers, at least 50W each. Love the auditions of the Reaper HP by itself (maybe pair with ET-65?) but then the new Invader 50 / Liberator 80 pairing on your YouTube audition sounded killer too!
Can you suggest a closed back pairing recommendation for my Lab Series / 2 x 12 Seismic rig (big volume cab), please?
thanks!!!
The Lab's are VERY!!! bass-heavy ... so in that big box, you'll need to be equally careful to NOT bring out too much bottom ... and to coax out lots of sweet/smooth top end.
So ... I'm going to make a totally crazy recommendation that I've NEVER made before ... but I feel fairly confident will work in your unique situation: one G12C & one Retro 30.
Let me know your results! I'll be interested!
Vaughn --
wow, totally different! I think I like the Greenback tone better than V30, but I see how the Retro 30 is a good compromise. I'm not really looking for the Fender sound, so I'm thinking the G-12C would be a bit too bright.
I tried the Lab with a friend's Marshall 1936 2x12 closed-back cab loaded with two Celestion G12T-75 (like the WGS HM75). Great British tone, with some nice Lab color -- but we actually kept trying for more bottom-end, which is what led me to the bigger 2x12 cab (same dimensions as the classic Orange 2x12).
I also tried the Lab with an open-back 1x15 EV Force 15 (Like a Lab Series L9?). Again, it didn't seem too dark to me and it sounded more Fender than Brit - must be the open back talking.
So if I go with the Retro 30… I might pair it with the ET65, Invader or the Reaper HP to keep some of the low end and still have some sparkle… wow, so many choices make a tough decision!
Waddya think?
Go ET-90 with the Ret 30...
Thanks Vaughn!
I wound up with the ET-65 and Retro 30. Sounds awesome. Tested individually, I like the clean and overdriven sound of the ET-65 better than the Retro 30, but the pairing with ET-65 on top of the Retro really gave it 3 dimensions. I'll probably wire in a stereo/mono jackplate to be able to switch voicings.
With the Lab and now these sweet speakers, this cab is great! Not too dark at all.
cheers!
