FWIW: I replaced the original Celetion G12 V-Type with a Retro 30 and it was like I pulled a blanket off the amp. The tone had been a bit thin and buzzy, but now the tone booms. mids appear about the same, the bottom is way tighter/fuller and the highs less severe. I wish i made a compare video, but oh well, maybe next time..
Good description. One thing, though: you wrote "now the tone booms", but you also stated that the bottom is tighter. Is the V-Type (or Vet 30) not "tight" in the bass, or does the midrange resonance just make it seem "loose"?
Say, what brand tubes come stock and what do you have in it now?
Thanks for taking the time to post your results here! Yea ... so often, after a speaker swap I think "man this would have made a good before/after video" ... but in the heat of the moment ya just wanta get-er-done, right?
And yes, the Ret 30 has both a more extended and gentle top end ("the tone booms ... the highs less severe") ... and ALSO an extended and more solid bottom end than a V-30 ("the bottom is way tighter/fuller").
Thanks again! -Vaughn-
