Hi,
I am playing a egnater tweaker 15h into a 1x12 semi open ibanez cab that has a seventy 80 in it. I know, I know..... Truth is that the speaker isnt to bad with the tweaker and actually sounds very good with my vht special 6.
I have another emtpy 1x12 open back cab and want a speaker that will compliment the seventy 80, or more like a speaker that the seventy 80 wont hurt that bad. The empty cab I have is actually an empty marshall 1x12 combo cab, obviously with no speaker or chassis. I was going to fab a little plate to cover the combo control panel area.
I play a g&l comanche, strat and an ibanez semi hollow. I play rock, reggae, funk, some blues, jam band and some jazzy funk.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Rob
I have a Celestion G12P-80, from what I have read is very similar to the Seventy 80. I like this speaker because it is dark, yet chimey on the top end. The best combo sound with the speakers I have in my possesion is with the Celestion V30. I have the Reaper HP, the G12C and an Eminence Cannabis Rex. The V30 adds some midrange while the G12P takes care of the top end. They both break up easily. Of course, if you go the WGS route, the appropriate speaker would be the Veteran 30.
A bit of a tough one since I really don't like the 70/80 ... very harsh and spiky, while at the same time sounding muddy ... yet not having a good solid bottom ... could it get much worse? Anyway, since those do come stock in a lot of amps that want to display the "Celestion Equipped" logo ... but want to do it on the cheap ... I imagine you are not alone.
Since the 70/80 is a Celestion voiced speaker (lotsa midrange bite) ... it would generally pair well with our very warm and balanced ET-65 ... that would be especially good for the "blues, and jazzy funk" you mentioned.
Another good choice would be the Retro 30 ... if you want to stay more Marshall/Celestion voiced ... it will fill in the bottom, and add some smooth shimmer to the top of the 70-80.
Hope this helps, and please post your results!
I ended up with a Reaper. Sounds excellent with my tweaker 15. It really pulls off the fender and british flavors this amp produces. Very Cool.
I still prefer the seventy 80 with my vht special 6. I am not a beliver of throwing out the speaker cause it has seventy 80 on the sticker. It sounds good and so it stays. I like it so I will keep it.
I have not played the tweaker or the special 6 with both speakers....yet.
I will try that out and post back the results.
Yea, the Reaper is also a fairly warm and juicy speaker ... roughly in the camp of the UK made G12H Annv. ... so ... yeah, I could see that making an awesome room-mate for the 70/80's! Thanks for the post :-)
I ended up buying a Reaper from you guys and couldnt be happier. It sounds great with with my tweaker. It really handles the fender cleans and british flavors that this amp provides very well.
I still do prefer the seventy 80 with my vht special 6. I know it sounds strange but it fits the amp well. I am not much of a believer of throwing the speaker out cause it is marked with seventy 80 on it. It sounds good with the vht and I will use it with it.
I have not run both the seventy 80 and the Reaper together...yet. I will do that soon enough.
Thanks for all the great vids Vaughn. they are very helpful.
Could you do one and compare the standard Reaper vs vintage 30 (or veteran 30)?
