Hi! I have a JCM 800 2203 100W and I would like to know what kind of speakers I can use with it to play songs by GNR, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Garry Moore and stuff like that! From hard-rock to blues-rock!
I'd guess that Vet 30s, Retro 30s, Green Berets, Reapers would cover most of that territory.
Any one or combination of these I think would sound great.
I have a few Vet 30s, a few Reaper 30s and a Retro 30. Love them all and I moslty play that Zeppelin/Hendrix bluesy/hard-rock stuff.
To my ears:
Vet 30- mid-rangey and punchy. Means business. Really must push before any breakup but it is there. Classic/hard rock monster. Great for heavy chords.
Reaper 30- full lows to sparkly highs. Smooth and crisp. Covers lots of ground and very colorful with vintage Brit tone with nice breakup but not too soon. Blues beauty. Best all-rounder but low-wattage requires multiple speakers for your application. There is a 50 watt Reaper but I think it is slightly darker sounding based on Vaughn's comparison videos.
Retro 30- agressive but not rude, clean, sparkly, tight low-end and very clear prominant mids and highs. NO breakup that I've heard (yet anyway). Very clean and bright and will cut through a brick wall but without injuring anyone. Very similar to the Vet 30 but with more "sparkle" and tighter lows and slightly higher power handling. If you fret about your leads being heard and/or don't like speaker breakup, this is probably the best choice of these four.
Currently looking for an excuse to "need" some Green Berets... lol.
Also, really depends too on how many you can use and in what cab(s).
Are you filling a 4x12? If so, a combo of Green Berets and Reapers might work great for a real classic Zeppelin-y tone and still not risk overloading the speakers. If you are only going with 2 speakers, I'd get a Vet 30s or Retro 30s or one of each for their power handling.
Other speakers may be great too but these are ones I play through all the time and think would work well for what you are going for AND you really can't go wrong with any of these IMHO.
