I'm putting together a recording rig for a classic heavy metal project Im working on. Just picked up a Dark Terror head and plugged it into my Marshall mini stack cabs (2) 1x10 closed back. I really liked the tight punchy focus of the 10's over my 4x12 cabs with the 15 watt head. This is a more recent version of the mini stack so no celestions in this one like the 80's version had...Im thinking the speakers probably arent everything they could be by the looks (and sound) of them. So I pulled the trigger on 2 WGS G10C's. I will be playing everything from crystal clear clean to very high gain through these....a myriad of guitars and pickups (active and passive)...possibly a few vintage effects. I will report back on my thoughts on the G10's. I havent really seen alot out there on the G10 mated with metal and hard rock...so I will be happy to put in my 2 cents for what its worth. I know most use 12's...and I do live...but I noticed that 10's translate extremely well for recording when its comes to metal. Anyway...I will check in once Ive spent a little time with the new speakers.
Yea ... you are in uncharted waters ... please do post back!
Hi Vaughn. Well I spent a little time with the new speakers (and rest of rig) over the weekend. Ive gotta say....they translated very close to how you describe them in your blog and posts that Ive read. I can tell these need a little more break in time before I can really give my full opinion on them...and I might even say the cabs I put these in are undersized....and definitely cheaply made (which I didnt realize until I was intalling my new WGS speakers).
Setup: 2 Marshall 1x10 mini stack cabs with WSG G10C's, Orange Dark Terror top, Boss 7 band EQ, Morley Bad Horsie Wah, ESP KH4 guitar with EMG 81's, Jackson Soloist with EMG 81/60.
First off....speakers looked great...packed well....a substantial improvement to the OEM speakers I pulled out. Much beefier magnet...nicely constructed as advertised. I only got about 4-5 hours of time to play on them but my initial impressions..
- Tight, punchy lows. Tighter than I expected...but definitely punchy. I think I could benefit from putting these in a larger 2x10 sealed birch cab for a little more low end....which Im already shopping for. No mud at all...period.
- Low\Mids....definitely my favorite part of this speaker. Throaty...focused. Palm muting...tremolo and legato picking sounds fantastic here. Articulate...and would punch right through a mix. I cant wait to record with thiese speakers.
- Mids...definitely agressive. Although....I think in the short time I played though these speakers...they sweetened up slightly. And they give me the impression there is still some sweetening to go as they break in. I wouldnt say too aggressive though...nice articulate crunch....and smooth...not harsh. Im thinking the right cab might tame that a bit for me....i just dialed it back slightly in the EQ...and it sounded fantastic.
- Mid/Hi and High... pretty smooth here. A bit of sparkle. Top end slice without the fizz....I really like the high and and mid\highs on this speaker. Seems to break up right where I want it too....which I like to push a speaker pretty hard before it breaks up. No ice picks here....I can hear the each individual string ringing in the upper register with no fuzz.
Again....another great reason I want to record with 10's....they just seem more balanced across the spectrum....and forcused for recording. I usually have to mix and match speakers, cabs and guitars to get everything I want out of 12's in the studio. Cant wait to cut some tracks with this new setup...once I get these fully broke in and get some things recorded....I will come back and share some and let the listener be the judge I suppose :)
Final Verdict of my initial impression - These 10's are everything theyre cracked up to be....and YES....they are going to sound fantastic for playing/recording some classic metal (thrash, speed metal, straight up regular metal, classic hard rock). Theyre definitely not one trick pony's. Ive always believed a great speaker is a great speaker...and will deliver the goods no matter what style you play through it...these are the real deal.
