The Fender Champ Amp & the WGS G8C

Fender Silver Face Chamnp

Hey ya all!  This week I’m doing something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, audition the G8C in myFender Champ Amp.  I’ve been excited about this speaker ever since I found out that WGS was making a speaker specifically for the Champ.  I tell ya what, I won’t waste any of your time, lets get right down to the video!  I hope you all appreciate that I set up some good mics for this little shoot-out.  Panned to one side is an AKG 414 as a distant mic and on the other side is an Audix D1 close up to the grill.  Read on for the video shoot-out!

Here is the Champ with its stock speaker:

And now with the WGS G8C:

Let me know if you like this kind of video comparison and I’ll do more of it.

Until next week... -Vaughn-

Hi Vaughn!  Just for fun I installed a WGS G8C in my Fender Tweed EC Vibro Champ to see what would happen because lots of times a better speaker makes a big difference even in an upper end amp because they don't always put in the best speaker from the factory.  WOW!  great tone and much more fullness, bass and volume from the WGS G8C than the Weber special design stock alnico speaker.  Good job on this one guys !  Thanks, Roy

Vaughn,
I saw the YouTube vids about the Champ; I had a similar experience myself!

I put a G8C in an old Peavey Rage 158 - CHEAP Chinese speaker - and the difference was like night and day!!!

The stock speaker was kinda tinny; the G8C is a LOT fuller, and a LOT louder!!!

I took the amp to a music store to show it off to friends who worked there; they were VERY impressed! They happened to have a Peavey Audition 20; A/B'ing between the two amps was - again - night and day! The stock speaker in the Audition was tinny to the point of being crappy (I think there was a problem with the speaker), and the Rage just blew it away!!!

It's a TOTALLY new amp!!!

I just got hold of a Crate TD50C Stereo Chorus amp, and I'm ALREADY wanting to swap the Crate Special Design 10s - I've seen how much you LOVE them - with a pair of ET10s. I'm also thinking about swapping the Celestial G12M-70 in my old KMD GV-60D with an ET65, too!

A friend of mine has an old Fender Super Six that's pretty shelled out; if I get the $$$ for it, I'd like to Blackface the circuit and swap the old Fender Special Design speakers with a combination of G10C and ET10. Good idea?

Yeah Bob, Take that Super Six, blackface her, do the speaker upgrades and have an ultimate Super Reverb! You can run it with all 4 6L6's for a 80(ish)-watt amp, or pull a pair for a 40-watt amp (ie the Super Reverb). If it were me, I'd either make the cab into a 4x10, or buy a 4x10 for it ... cuz it's just stupidly big. A pair each of the G10C's and ET10's will EASILY handle the full 100-watts.
