I have had this amp since new, loved it to begin with (my first real amp, bought it with my Dad) but as I played other amps (like fooling around) she was less and less my girl. Early 90‘s I pick up an almost new Bassman 4x10 reissue - now I get the clean and sparkle with my Strat and Tele and it takes peddles really well - great overdrive and grit. Fast forward many years, buy a new place and here I am moving the DR II I don’t play. But I now have room for both, a daughter that wants to play and my bother and/or friends over to jam (extra amp comes in handy). But I still don’t Love the sound! I was ready to sell and move on - sentimental value moved me to try to give it new life. Discover WGS and Vaughn’s Q&A. Read your comments on the Deluxe Reverb (though mine is a Rivera era) and the ET65 - ordered one up from Steamco here in Canada - Now I’m in love again. Were it was once uninspiring, it now sounds alive. Now I would like you to do this again.
When we jam were a bunch of older guy’s playing what we knew growing up - Ramones, AC/DC, Zeppelin et-al. Now I’m not looking to “match” those sounds but when I play my DR (we us the Bassman for bass), with my brother or mates, even with the ET65 - it seems to need some bigger “balls”. Got me thinking about a closed back 2x12 - the closed back giving it more punch and the chance to mix speakers. Loved your 2x12 shootout with the ET65 paired with other speakers - the open chords with the reaper was cool - but that’s through a Marshall not my Rivera era Fender. It’s obvious you know these amps - what pairing do you think would work. Or am I really trying to dress my Fender up as a Marshall and the two just don’t dance.
Thanks
Michael
PS
I think I've had too much coffee this morning
Yea ... I have too much coffee almost EVERY morning!
Glad you're diggin' on the ET65 ... those speakers can be pure magic with the right pairing!
For the ext cab ... here is another take: How about a pair of Green Berets? That'll Marshall up the Rivera Deluxe a bit, and they work SOOO well in closed-back ... plus they are very efficient and will make a big deal of the Deluxes output.
Food for thought...
Thanks for the reply Vaughn. Did some listening, some reading and I think your right. For what I want out of the cabinet the green berets should hit the mark. I’m hoping this will be a fathers day gift (hint hint my loving Wife) and I’ll let you know how it sounds. Now I just have to get my wife to read this forum.
Thanks,
Michael
When it comes to shoes, boots and sandals, one can NEVER have too many. Same goes for belts, purses, and clothing accessories. I mean, seriously, who would even CONSIDER wearing a belt that was a slightly different shade of brown than the shoes one is wearing? Could the same be said for guitars, amps, speakers and accessories? The only possible answer to this question is a hearty "yes"!
There ... now tell her there is this blog she NEEDS to read expounding the virtue of shoes and "accessories".
