Hello :)
This thursday I will get an used 4x12 cabinet with Celestion V30´s. I already know V30´s are not this transparent and are more on the muddy side. The easiest an cheapest way would be to pair them with some other speakers. I think I have read every post in this forum with nearly the same usage, but I am still not sure.
My goal: extreamly responsive, tight and transparent sound.
My guitar: different telecaster´s always with Humbucker
My amp: Digitech 1101 --> Fryette/VHT 2/90/2 (100W tube) --> cabinet (actually 2x12 V30 and WGS Hm75).
My style: progressive, post-hardcore, hardcore, rock, alternative
Speaker: ET90, ET65, Vet30, Ret30, Hm75
1. Pairing
I think the cheapest way would be to pair the Celestion V30´s with ET65? Or does the ET90 fit better?
2. Swapping
From what I have read the ET90 will be a good choice for heavy music, but there are some other recommendations about Vet30, Ret30 or pairings with ET65´s. So I have no clue which speaker is super responsive ... I would like to feel the chug before I´ll play it *haha* I expect an extreamly tight bass response and overall sensivite response characteristic from the speakers to shine with progressive playing style on the percussive side. They should handle medium gain very well and a nice clean sound would be a plus.
Which of your speakers would be recommend?
Thank you very much :)
So no recommendations? Anyone?
It was SOOOO LOOOONG !
But ... for me the key was this:
"...extreamly tight bass response and overall sensivite response characteristic from the speakers to shine with progressive playing style on the percussive side. They should handle medium gain very well and a nice clean sound would be a plus."
That would be our Retro 30!
Yes, soooo looooong, but luckily you´ve replied :)
Thx for your advice. Can you tell me how the Retro compare to the ET90? I have received two early production versions of the ET90´s yesterday (silver back, normally labeld as 12 65H).
If I put together everything I´ve read about some WGS speakers I am interested in I would say:
- HM75: Heavy bottom with agressive mids/high mids. I have paired it with a V30 in a 2x12 Cab. So is this the most agressive speaker in your collection? I think the cab should be bigger because the HM75 needs more room for the bottom end.
- ET90: Heavy bottom with more low mids and smooth highs. Paired them actually with V30´s in my 4x12 Cabinet and need to check this combination with high volume to push the speakers even more.
- Retro 30: So this is an Vet 30 with deeper and tighter bottom end, some more high mids / highs that give more attack/aggressiveness?
So if we compare this three speakers, would you say the Retro 30 has not the deepest, but tightest bottom end, the HM75 the deepest and the ET90 the deepest and most rounded overall enhancement?
Would you load only Retro 30´s into the 4x12 cab, or should they be paired with HM75 for a more agressive sound? Or maybe with ET90´s for a more solid sound in the bottom mids?
I think it is a little difficult to choose a speaker by the sound samples on this website and videos on youtube. Most of the samples are oriented to normal rock. C-tuning and heavy playing is more of an specific category, but I´ll try to share everything I´ve learned from the different speaker combinations and will make a review :)
The only thing I would add to your well thought-out and accurate assessment is this one thing: The HM75's are speakers that NEED to be driven to open up and sound good. They do sound particularly good when driven hard on drop-tunings (like you do) ... they sound like crap with a guitar in standard tuning played quietly!
For you, I would think the HM75/Retro 30 combo would be a match made in heaven!
