I Have an old EVML with a Mesa Boogie Label on it in my 1982 Fender Deluxe ll made by Rivera.  It has no life. I'm into that Robben Ford sound. Love to play Blues/Rock/Jazz.  I use pedals and want clean Fender type head room but want Robben Ford type leads with my Zen Drive pedal.  I like a big sound with nice deep round bass, decent mids (but not where it affects the clarity) and shimmring highs that arent piecing. ( I know i'm asking for a lot! LOL)  Being that Robben Ford uses a Celestion 65 I thought maybe getting the ET-65 but i want a BIG sound as I mentioned so I'm thinking the ET-90.  What do you think Vaughn?  Thanks in advance :-)

The ET90 ... maybe ...

But...

"a big sound with nice deep round bass, decent mids (but not where it affects the clarity) and shimmring highs that arent piecing."

That's exactly the Retro 30!

Will this sound good in a single speaker combo?  I thought the retro is at it's best when conmbined with another speaker.  Is this speaker an alternative to a Celestion vintage 30? Thanks Vaughn!

The Vet 30 is ... but the Ret 30 really branches out in a different territory, with more deep bottom and more sparkle on top.

Hey ... also ... I just remembered that way back when I did a shootout in my Rivera Concert II 1x12 ... and the speaker I personally preferred was the Reaper HP ... I know, muddying the waters ...

Thank you for the suggestion but from what I'm reading the Reaper HP is more for metal players.  I'm looking for a speaker that will give me an agressive blues sound like Robben Ford from the Fender Deluxe ll designed by Rivera.  I understand that the amp has a lot to do with the sound but will the reaper HP come close or is there another good option?  I also want the power handling and headroom being that I use pedals.  Thanks again Vaughn!!! :-)

the name "Reaper" sounds "metal" ... but it's NOT!!!  It's actually a very warm and balanced speaker ... our take on the UK made Celestion G12H30.

Do you think the Blackhawk HP would blues it up?

Yes ... if you can afford AlNiCo, this would probably be the ultimate speaker for this amp!

Whatever you choose ... be sure to post back here with your results.

Do you think the Blackhawk 50 watt or the Blackhawk HP for this amp?

I'd go 50-watt ... but go to this blog, listen through good speakers, and decide what you like best.

It says that the Blackhawk HP is a drop in replacement for an EV SRO.  Does the 50watt Blackhawk have a simialiar EV SRO tone in a smallers watt rating?  Thanks!

Again ... I'd say give the youtube vid a listen & see what you think ... I personally find the HP a bit brighter than an old EV ... but it's hard to find any two of those old gals that sound the same after decades of service!
