I just picked up a MM 210HD-130 (2-10 Vibrolux sized 130 Watt Hybrid/EL34 amp) that currently has seriously outgunned Jensen C10Qs in there. I am looking for a very tight bottom end lots of clean headroom in the blackface tone family. Would the G10C work in this application? I've considered old-school high efficiency JBLs or EVs but I'm hearing that they don't play well with much overdrive. My goal is to have an uber-clean basic tone and use pedals for OD. I've never been a huge fan of much speaker break-up. thanks
Hi, sounds like you and I have quite similar tastes in tone! And yes, you are (in my opinion) dead-on with your research thus far. The Alnico JBL D110F's would totally give you the clean headroom ... but they are among the most sterile and non-responsive speakers in the world with overdriven tones ... the EV's are not much better, although I have fairly fond memories of the old Force10's ... but that memory dates back to when I was in my teens, and my glasses were in fact quite rose colored then! I must admit that these same glasses have often resulted in seriously distorted memories. I hate to say it, but one that was recently busted was concerning a music man amp. That's the topic of my blog this week ... check it out!
At any rate, how on earth did C10Q's end up in that amp ... and better yet, how are they still functioning? Someone must have been very careful with their volume on that puppy! Our G10's would be a much better match, but are still just a little out-gunned by that amp ... but apart from old EV Force 10's or EVM10L's, almost anything will be ... unless you choose speakers intended for bass ... which will be inefficient, scooped, and highly inarticulate!. The G10's will provide exactly what you want up untill about the point of clipping on the power section of the HD-130 ... at which point they will be starting to fall apart.
Hope this helps ...
Thanks.
The C10Qs are farty but functioning - no idea why a previous ownder put them in there. I may try the G10s - I can't really expect anything except EVs or JBLs to handle the amp dimed in a 2-10 configuration, but then again I can't imagine ever needing to do that.
