Amp Rx Part 1 - The Peavey Windsor Studio

Hey tone brothers and sisters! I promised a guy a while back that I would do a little research and see what WGS model most improves a Peavey Windsor Studio amp.  Well wait no longer!  Vaughn’s Rx for a small, sterile and lifeless Peavey Windsor Studio: 1. Switch the EL34 to a 6L6 and 2. Install a WGS ET65.

The result: more useable headroom and bottom end, and a much more three-dimensional sounding amp.  Here is the video, next week, we tackle another tone-challenged tube amp, the Gibson GA20-RVT (reissue).  Oh, and one update, since I did the video, I played a bunch w/pre-amp tubes and found that putting a NOS 5751 in V1 also provided a slight tone improvement - mostly a smoother, more articulate transition into overload and better clean-up w/ the guitars vol control.

See ya next week fellow tone junkies!

Hey Vaughn,

I just popped a Green Beret in my Windsor Studio (my first purchase from WSG).  The difference, even before speaker break-in, is remarkable.  I'm sticking with the EL-34 in the power section, 'cause I'm a Marshall guy and I like the creamy breakup (and the Windsor Studio is supposed to be based on a JCM 900 circuit).  Even so, the bass response is much improved, the headroom is noticeably increased and the string definition is sooooo much better.  This last is the real selling point; the amp is glassier with single coils and and fat ass lardacious with humbuckers.  I do smaller gigs with this amp (we mic everything) and I can't wait to get it out.

I run a Classic 50 2 x 12 for larger gigs and I'm thinking I want to throw one Green Beret and one Reaper in that---any recommendations (I think one of those speakers will definitely have to be a Green Beret)?

Gotta run.  I've got some Blue Marvels to get rid of......

John

I'm a Fender guy ... but if I were a real Marshall guy, then I'd probably do just what you did - EL34 and the GB!

Given your Marshallesque taste ... I'd say your GB/Reaper combo will suit you very well.
