AMERICAN MADE!
AMERICAN MADE!
Warning: For those of you who have been reading this blog regularly, this may seem like a re-hashing of the same old stuff. GUILTY! I just can’t help myself. Yesterday I was having a conversation with some guys at the Y ... the kind of conversation that can only take place in a sauna. As we sweated it out, we were talking about the state of America. As always, one guy made the comment that "Until we start manufacturing products again, America will never be great like it used to be". All heads nodded up and down. This seems to be the feeling of Americans all over. Okay WGS gang, can we talk about this? Come on, humor me!
The first thing that came to my mind was my Dad. He’s been a Farmer for decades, right on the Minnesota/Iowa border. He’s farmed close to a thousand acres for all of those years, and raised cattle and hogs, too. Let’s do a little math here:
500 acres of Corn averaging 130 bushels per acre at about $7/bushel = $455,000
500 acres of soybeans averaging 70 bushels per acre at about $10/bushel = $350,000
Plus, 100 head of cattle and 100 head of hogs!
That’s over a million dollars in American made product produced by one small Midwest farmer. Pretty darn good stuff. Even if everything else in America were to fall to pieces, we would still have the most productive cropland on planet earth. The last Ice age gave us that. As the glaciers advanced and then melted, they scraped all of the fertile soil off of most of what is today called Canada, and deposited it in the US upper mid-west. Where I come from, the top soil is hundreds of feet deep, and fertile as all get-out. The petrolium, steel, and coal industries may not last forever, but as long as the world’s population continues to grow, and people continue to eat, American Farmers will continue to be okay. Now, let’s talk speakers.
As the guys and I sweated it out in the Sauna, I mentioned WGS. I talked about how WGS is employing Americans to manufacture speakers in Paducah, Kentucky. I mentioned that our business is actually growing, and that the future looks very bright for WGS. It seemed too good to be true for some of the guys. "Why" was the big question; couldn’t the Chinese make a better product for far less money?? I did my best to explain that the simple answer to that question was: NO! The Chinese could certainly beat us on price, but quality, no way! I explained that there were still plenty of folks out there that were ready to spend a buck or two extra to get a superior sounding speaker made in America by people who really care about what they are manufacturing.
As we left the Sauna, I couldn’t help but notice that all the guys were holding their heads a little higher and walking a little lighter. That’s what companies like WGS are doing for America. If Mr. Obama were to just ask David (WGS President) how to best improve the nation’s economy, all our national problems would be instantly solved. That, my friends, is why I’m proud to be a part of the WGS family.
Until next time, -Vaughn-
